If ever I need a gun...

  

Conservatives: I may actually be starting to come around to your way of thinking. I may have to think seriously about whether I may someday need a gun to protect myself. 


But not in a way that you'll like, or for a reason you'll like.


I have never felt the need to get a gun to protect myself or my family from house breakers. Locking ourselves in our rooms and calling the police would be the far better option for our safety. (Because we're white, mind you; if we were black we might be safer with the robbers).

I have never felt the need to get a gun to protect myself from gang members. I have walked alone and unafraid in Crip territory at midnight.

I have never felt the need to get a gun to protect myself from left wing protesters. The violence comes almost entirely from the police and from armed conservative counter protesters, rather than the protesters.

I have never felt the need to get a gun to protect myself from a mugger. I am much better off running than trying to pull a gun in that situation.

I have never felt the need to get a gun to protect myself from Muslim terrorists. They frankly don't need to do anything at all - we tore our own country apart in response to an attack they set up 21 years ago.


Statistically, none of those people are likely to shoot me. Statistically, the most likely person to shoot me is a white conservative fundamentalist Christian man who lives in my white neighborhood and legally owns a bunch of guns.


So I am not worried about the people you seem to think are the biggest danger. I am worried about the people who actually are the biggest danger to me.


When I keep hearing conservatives talk about overthrowing a democratically elected government by force; when I keep seeing unwavering conservative support for authoritarian people and policies; when I keep seeing that practically every school shooter is an angry conservative white guy whose anger comes from the same news sources that fuel your anger; when I keep seeing conservatives cheer that Rittenhouse was released; when I keep seeing conservatives talk of civil war and rising up to rid the country of those damn leftists... I do sometimes wonder:


Will I someday need a gun to protect myself from someone like you?

On Kilmar Abrego Garcia, Evangelical Republicans, and Judas Iscariot

A matter of principle

Ever since November of 2016, the question has haunted me: How did the conservative Evangelicals I grew up with so thoroughly lose their principles? And the correct answer is: They never had principles.  But for once, I don't intend that as an insult. I mean this as a distinction between two different ways of looking at morality. Evangelicals never had principles; they had RULES. Because that's how their churches train them to think. They (along with the Catholics, who have fallen into the same error) are religious fundamentalists. They don't treat morality as a set of flexible guidelines that can and should change over time; they treat morality as a set of rules that are "the same yesterday, today, and forever".
