You are NOT pro-life

 

Yet again, the news shows that the right-wing people who are loudest about their "god-given right" to own any gun they want, are the last people who should be trusted with a gun. 

Now, I've started to genuinely be swayed in my thinking by some reasonable people who want the shootings to stop but don't believe that banning specific guns will achieve that. They aren't NRA members, mind you, but they are gun owners and they do actually note some concerns that have given me pause. They advocate instead for such measures as closing loopholes in the law, ensuring that no gun can be sold without a background check, and ensuring that such people as domestic violence suspects do not get to have guns.

But you know something? The people that right-wing gun owners sent to Congress could have proposed those solutions in a clean bill that doesn't include poison pills, and have steadfastly refused to do so. They could have worked with the liberals to at least tighten up background checks, but instead shot down every attempt to do so. And right-wing religious people keep sending them anyway, and never told them "Hey, we don't want gun bans, but you do need to damn well fix our laws so they can make it more difficult for sociopaths to get weapons". So even if they agree that something in the law isn't working and should change (and 80% of gun owners say they DO agree with at least tighter background checks), they keep supporting a platform of never ever changing anything at all.

That's not the biggest thing on my mind right now, though.

What's on my mind right now is the fact that a client of mine just got COVID-19 and will probably die from it.

Now, this person would probably have died from other issues within a year. But they could have had that year. And they could have died from something less traumatic than slow suffocation.

And the main reason this person doesn't get to have that year of life, or an easy death? 

Evangelical fucking Christians. 

These are the asswipes who from the beginning have resisted any and all efforts to contain the pandemic so it wouldn't infect vulnerable people. These motherfuckers are the ones who still refuse vaccines, never would wear masks or stop having large gatherings back before we had vaccines, spread conspiracy theories about how the masks and vaccines are somehow more dangerous than a virus that literally eats human lungs, and supported a president who regularly spouted dangerous bullshit about the virus instead of encouraging his fans to do the things that would have contained the virus.

If you are an Evangelical, this person's blood, along with the blood of countless other innocents, is on your hands.

Even if you personally did what you were supposed to do - even if you personally masked and stayed the fuck at home and got the vaccine - you empowered the churches and politicians who went out of their way to make this plague far worse than it had to be. You voted for Mr. "Why don't we try taking bleach internally" and continued to support him even as he argued for a year with people who actually knew what the fuck they were talking about. You gave money to the churches that held weekly superspreader events in defiance of both the law and common sense. And most of all, you didn't tell your brethren to do the shit they needed to do in order to reduce the death toll. Those dumbfucks would never have listened to me - they know I'm a liberal and therefore they see me automatically as a liar and an enemy, and my every word as something to be gainsaid. But they would have listened to you, a fellow conservative and a fellow believer, if you had told them that "Love your neighbor as yourself" means sacrificing your own desires in order to protect your neighbor. And you fucking DIDN'T. Because of you, this thing kept spreading, kept having new hosts in which to mutate into new vaccine-resistant forms, kept infecting and killing more people.

So fuck each and every one of you. You are accessories to the murder of a sweet, innocent person with a disability, just as surely as you are accessories to the murder of 19 children this week. By your actions or failures to act, you killed them, and you killed many others just like them. If there was any such thing as divine justice, you would even now be experiencing the wrath of one who said that it would be better for people like you to have a millstone tied around your neck and be cast into the sea.

You are not pro-life, and never were. There is innocent blood on your hands, and always has been. And I am not going to let you pretend otherwise anymore. Because now it's personal. Now you're killing someone I know and care for. And I will never let you forget that.
