I don't know it for a fact, I just know that it's true...

 I saw this post on Facebook today:

The caption read, "People of all genders, ages, sexual orientations, races, and branches of service have experienced military sexual trauma (MST). Learn about the many VA care options specifically designed to help MST survivors."

I noticed that about a quarter of the reactions were laugh reacts, and a number of the comments were based in rape culture and bigotry. 


Now, all the people who are such shitty excuses for human beings that they would laugh react at a post offering help for rape victims, or insist that rape never happened when they served back in 'Nam, or insist that rape and assault and trauma are just occupational hazards of being in the military, or respond by just generally bitching about how including all genders in the post is "woke nonsense" and there are only two genders...


I don't know for a fact that the overwhelming majority of these people are Evangelical Christians... who claim to follow the guy that told his followers to gouge out their own eyes or cut off their own hands rather than even THINK about committing a sexual sin against a fellow human.

I don't know for a fact that these people who are laughing at or arguing against the idea of offering support to rape victims... are ALSO the people who want transphobic bathroom bills because they say those bills will protect their wives and daughters from rape.

I don't know for a fact that these people who think it's hilarious that teenaged troops can be rape victims... are ALSO the people who claim to be "protecting children" when they vote against teenaged rape victims having the right to an abortion, or when they want to ban books that acknowledge the existence of LGBTQ kids, or when they send children to "conversion therapy" to be tortured out of being gay.

I don't know for a fact that these people whose response to the post was to deny the problem... don't understand why a rape victim wouldn't come forward right away.

I don't know for a fact that these people all voted for a guy who bragged on tape about how many women he's gotten away with sexually assaulting.

I don't know for a fact that the shittiest and least moral people this country has to offer were commenting on this post, and that they're conservative Evangelicals who would consider themselves to be on the moral high ground.


I don't know it for a fact.


I just know it's true.

On Kilmar Abrego Garcia, Evangelical Republicans, and Judas Iscariot

A matter of principle

Ever since November of 2016, the question has haunted me: How did the conservative Evangelicals I grew up with so thoroughly lose their principles? And the correct answer is: They never had principles.  But for once, I don't intend that as an insult. I mean this as a distinction between two different ways of looking at morality. Evangelicals never had principles; they had RULES. Because that's how their churches train them to think. They (along with the Catholics, who have fallen into the same error) are religious fundamentalists. They don't treat morality as a set of flexible guidelines that can and should change over time; they treat morality as a set of rules that are "the same yesterday, today, and forever".
